Rash driving case: bail for Saif

MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was arrested and released on bail on Saturday after a 13-year-old boy was injured when the actor's sports utility vehicle hit him on Friday evening. The teenager sustained a hairline fracture.

DCP Amitabh Gupta said that Saif Ali Khan was driving his vehicle past Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan's College in Andheri, a western suburb of the city, when he ran into Shakil Sheikh who was trying to cross the road. The actor took Shakil to a nearby hospital and also informed the police about the incident. Saif was released on bail of Rs.5,000. He also underwent a medical examination to see if he was under the influence of alcohol.

Mr. Gupta said a case was registered for rash driving under Sections 279, 338 and 339 of the Indian Penal Code.

While Section 279 pertains to rash driving, 338 to causing hurt by rash action and 339 to wrongful restraint.

Saif Ali Khan later said that he would bear all the medical expenses of the boy and has already paid Rs. 15,000.
