Retired judges to clear backlog

CHANDIGARH:
The Union Law Ministry has agreed to the Supreme Court's suggestion that retired judges be appointed ad hoc judges to clear the backlog of criminal appeals and other cases.
Letters have been sent to the Chief Justices of High Courts advising them to appoint retired judges, Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj said in a chat with mediapersons here on Saturday.
Chief Justice of India Y.K. Sabharwal described the move to appoint retired judges as a "welcome step."
