Call to preserve ecological traditions

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The increasing tendency to plunder hills for soil and granite poses a serious threat to the environment in Kerala, noted filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan has warned. He was inaugurating a seminar on Ecological Traditions of Kerala, organised by the C.P. Ramaswamy Aiyar Environmental Education Centre, here recently. Mr. Gopalakrishnan said environmental degradation in Kerala was largely the result of a callous approach to nature and the rich natural resources in the State.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan said the population boom had increased the pressure on land, promoting vertical growth of cities. "We are losing the green cover in the process. Pollution and traffic congestion have made life miserable. Many parts of the State witness water scarcity in summer and flooding during the rains," he said. Mr. Gopalakrishnan said the plastic waste menace constituted another major threat to the fragile environment.

Presiding over the function, CPREEC director Nandita Krishna stressed the need to strengthen local communities and encourage them to preserve biodiversity. She said unsustainable agricultural practices and modernisation had led to large-scale deforestation in parts of the country.

"In many tribal communities, traditional practices like veneration of the sacred groves, trees, tanks or gardens promoted respect for nature," she said. Ms. Krishna called for restoring the ecological traditions and the Indian heritage of conservation.

INTACH director S. Sathis Chandran Nair, Thrivikramji, Asha Latha Thampuran and S. Rajasekharan also spoke.
