Special Correspondent

Maharashtra, Gujarat also directed to refund sum released for relief

BANGALORE: The Centre's decision to seek refund of Rs. 158 crores from the amount released for flood relief will not in any way affect development works in the State, Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh has said.

Participating in the birth anniversary celebrations of the former Chief Minister, S. Nijalingappa, at Vidhana Soudha on Saturday, Mr. Dharam Singh told reporters it is not just Karnataka that has been asked to return the compensation.

Maharashtra has been asked to return Rs. 406 crores and Gujarat Rs. 192 crores.

Mr. Dharam Singh said he will meet the Prime Minister on December 14 and explain to him the difficulties faced by the State in the wake of heavy rain.

Assistance

The visit of Microsoft Corporation chairman Bill Gates will help in getting funds for health programmes in the State.

The Government has appealed to the Gates Foundation to grant assistance to rural development projects, Mr. Dharam Singh said.

Minister for Water Resources and Transport M. Mallikarjun Kharge, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education R. Ramalinga Reddy, and Chief Secretary B.K. Das also paid tributes to S. Nijalingappa.
