Motorola signals its entry into Madurai

Shastry V. Mallady

MoU soon for wireless testing and rural connectivity

MADURAI: Global telecom major, Motorola, is all set to enter Madurai very soon with the company choosing it for establishing its wireless testing facilities for rural connectivity.

The Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) will be the co-partner in this project that is aimed at providing wireless connectivity in and around Madurai region.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) is to be signed in the next few days after which an expert team from Motorola, USA, will bring in its equipment required to take forward the field-testing exercise.

V. Abhaikumar, Principal, TCE, told The Hindu on Sunday that the Advanced Research Centre in the college would be the functional point, since Motorola would use the college hi-tech laboratory facilities for its trials.

According to him, the college already signed the MoU documents and Motorola would complete the process soon. To start with, wireless testing in the region would be undertaken in an attempt to provide rural connectivity and as a first step tests would be carried out in a `pilot village.' Based on the results, the wireless project might be extended to other villages since the global company was keen to study the signals and receiving capacity available at the moment.

Dr. Abhaikumar said the Motorola deal was a further boost to TCE as already the college was playing a role as Technology, Information Forecasting Assessment Council (TIFAC)-Centre of Relevance and Excellence (CORE) in the area of Wireless Technologies, a programme of Department of Science and Technology.

National conference on Dec. 11, 12

The institution is hosting a national conference on `radio frequency and base band systems for wireless applications' on December 11 and 12 by inviting experts and delegates from different parts of the country.
