Bharathi Award for Shanta

Poet identified himself with common man: Barnala The event marked the conclusion of the celebrations of Subramania Bharathiar's birth anniversary

CHENNAI: The Bharathi Award 2005 was conferred on V. Shanta, head of the Cancer Institute, by the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, at the Bharathi Illam in Triplicane here on Sunday. The event marked the conclusion of the celebrations of Subramania Bharathiar's birth anniversary.

The Vanavil Cultural Centre, which instituted the award, to be presented to eminent people from the State, had conducted a three-day literary and cultural celebration in connection with the birth anniversary of the Tamil nationalist poet.

"It is befitting that the award is given to Dr. Shanta for she is an example of the empowered woman Bharathiar dreamt of," Mr. Barnala said.

Bharathi's poetry

He also praised Bharathiar's poetry for its condemnation of the caste system, its futuristic vision and patriotism. "He truly identified himself with the common man and has now become a household name," the Governor noted.

Women empowerment

Dr. Shanta, Ramon Magsaysay awardee, recalled the services of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy, founder of the Cancer Institute, for the cause of women empowerment . "Bharathiar's dream of an empowered woman remains a dream and disparities and violent practices against women like female infanticide are still rampant," she said.

She reiterated that at least three-fourths of all cancer cases were preventable and curable in nature.

She urged professionals to join in both raising public awareness and involving in research about the disease.

Previous recipients of the award included President A.P.J Abdul Kalam, eminent agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan and the former Chief Election Commissioner T.N. Seshan.
