COIMBATORE: Traders who suffered losses in the floods should also be given relief, Communist Party of India State secretary D. Pandian said here on Monday. "Small traders and entrepreneurs were severely affected, especially because of power disruption for more than 10 days. Goods could not be despatched and this resulted in huge losses. Even the information technology sector in Chennai was hit," he told presspersons. These people should be given compensation immediately. The Centre should not cause any further delay by sending another team to assess the damage. It could get the details through Members of Parliament.
Less allocation
When his attention was drawn to the Centre's relief allocation being far less than what the State demanded, Mr. Pandian said the Centre had not announced any allocation. "As far as we know, the Centre has only sought specific details of the losses suffered by various sections. We will, however, oppose low allocation." Mr. Pandian urged the State Government to carry out repairs to tanks. It should also revive a wing, formed for this purpose during the British regime, in the Public Works Department. He said the CPI cadres would observe a fast at Sathyamangalam in Erode district on December 16 to demand withdrawal of the Special Task Force from the forests. Those affected by the STF during the operations to nab brigand Veerappan would participate and demand action against the personnel indicted for excesses by the Sadasiva Commission. With the STF still in the jungles to hunt down naxalites, the excesses were continuing, he said.
