Release of water

from dam sought

CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam principal secretary Durai Murugan has sent a telegram to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa seeking release of water from the Mordhana dam.

Mr. Murugan, who represents Katpadi and is also deputy leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, said there was acute drinking water shortage in Gudiyatham and Katpadi Assembly constituencies in Vellore district. The dam caters to the area and was now full. "Kindly direct PWD officials to open the left bank and the right bank canals of Mordhana dam." — Special Correspondent

Workshop planned

VELLORE: The Computer Society of India (CSI), Division VIII and CSI, Vellore Chapter, are jointly organising a two-day workshop on Data Warehousing, Data Mining and Business Intelligence at the Vellore Institute of Technology on December 16 and 17.

It is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of data warehousing, data mining and techniques of business intelligence to improved business performance and organisational effectiveness. The participants will get an opportunity to discuss the concepts and techniques that will address the issues and challenges faced by them, says a CSI release.

Five injured in attack

THANJAVUR: Five persons were injured after they were allegedly beaten up by a group at Thokkalikadu near Adhirampattinam in Thanjavur district on Monday.

According to Collector M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, the Revenue department had decided to remove some encroachments in the Pethankulam area at Thokkalikadu. Before the officials reached the spot, the husband of Thokkalikadu Panchayat president went with some people and tried to remove the encroachments.

The affected people protested and were allegedly beaten up. They lodged a police complaint. The Collector and Superintendent of Police Senthamaraikannan rushed to Thokkalikadu and sought the help of the people to defuse the tension. Three persons were arrested. — Staff Reporter

Nagapattinam ryots face fertilizer shortage

NAGAPATTINAM: Shortage of urea, gypsum and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) is hampering the efforts of farmers who are trying to save the partially damaged samba paddy crop in rain in Nagapattinam district.

Farmers in Mayiladuturai, Sirkazhi, Kuttalam and Sembanarkovil areas are running from pillar to post trying to procure these fertilizers. These are neither available with the cooperative societies or with private dealers.

K.G. Krishnamoorthy, vice-president of the Thanjavur District Farmers Association, said authorities had not bothered to stock the fertilizers to meet the requirement of the farmers. — Staff Reporter

Marthanda Varma bereaved

CHENNAI: Smt. Radha Devi, wife of the present head of the Travancore Royal Family, Marthanda Varma, passed away in a private hospital here after a brief illness.

Sources said she was being treated at Devaki Hospital for renal complications and Sri Marthanda Varma, was tending to her during her stay in hospital.

The cremation took place at Kilpauk on Monday evening. — Special Correspondent

Two killed in

separate accidents

Tuticorin: Sivakumar (24) and Perama (7) were killed in two separate accidents that took place in the district on Sunday night. Police said Sivakumar died after the bike he was riding collided with a van at Masarpatti. Perama, who was travelling with her father and sister in a bike, was killed after the bike they were travelling hit another bike at Koppampatti. Petchiammal (8) and Annamuthu (27), sister and father of the deceased respectively, were later admitted to Tiruneveli Medical College and Hospital.

Token fast

Nagercoil: Activists of the Federation of Mukkadal Women Associations observed a token fast in front of the Collectorate, here on Monday, to urge the Government to find out an early solution to their seven point charter of demands, including implementation of saving-cum-relief scheme exclusively for their benefit, setting up of fisherwomen co-operative societies in all the coastal villages of the district, etc. The district organiser of the Federation, Alphonsal, led the agitation.

Youth held for

teasing woman

Tuticorin: A 28-year-old youth, who had allegedly teased a married woman at Muthukrishnapuram, was arrested here on Monday. Police said Subramanian teased Jeeva and outraged her modesty while she was fetching water from a public tap on Sunday. The accused was remanded under the Section 4 of Women Harassment Act.

Held for possessing lottery tickets

Tuticorin: Police have arrested Karuppasamy (34) on a charge of possessing lottery tickets here on Sunday. The accused was taken into the custody while he was standing at V.V.D. Road under suspicious circumstances.

Theft cases solved

Tuticorin: The police have solved multiple theft cases with the arrest of one Senthurpandi on Monday. According to police, the accused had stolen brass items, radio, ceiling fan and cash from Eral, Authoor, Sawyerpuram and Eruvapuram areas recently.

Apart from it, he took away a motorbike belonging to Mookandi kept at Authoor.

Villagers picket road

DINDIGUL: About 200 persons, including 25 women, residing in AP Nagar, Karim Nagar and Periya Pallapatti on the outskirts of Dindigul picketed the Batlagundu-Dindigul main road on Monday, demanding relief to the affected people.

They alleged that relief was not disbursed to the affected people properly and officials did not visit some of the places in these areas to assess the flood damage.

Traffic was disrupted for more than two and a half hours. Later, police and revenue officials visited the spot and held a discussion with the agitators. On the basis of an assurance given by the officials, the villagers withdrew the agitation. — Staff Reporter
