The unprecedented floods caused by the torrential rains during the past 25 days have caused extensive damage in the State. The amount of Rs. 500 crores sanctioned by the Centre and the amount of Rs. 14,000 crores sought by the Chief Minister for relief and rehabilitation will not be suffice. The heavy flood damage suffered by Tamil Nadu should be declared as a national disaster and immediate follow-up action should be taken to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies in future. R. Ramaiah, Pudukottai. Post card shortage Post cards are not available for sale in post offices in Thanjavur. It is stated that there is no supply of it, for some time now. As post cards are the means for communication to the poor, the department should ensure availability of the same in post offices. G. Vedarajan, Thanjavur. Ghastly sight Recently I travelled by a bus from Mayiladuthurai to Tiruvarur. On the wayside in some major panchayat town areas, particularly between Peralam and Poonthottam, I was shocked to see that sheep were slaughtered in the open in front of meat stalls. There is a reason to believe that some people, especially women and children, will develop psychological problem when they happen to witness these ghastly sight. The respective panchayat authorities must strictly prohibit this practice. S. Muthukrishnan, Mayiladuthurai. Late delivery of phone bills Of late, letters of telephone and cell phone bills are not delivered in time thereby making customers to pay the bills with penalty. Many bills are yet to be received by the BSNL customers. The postal authorities when contacted are not giving convincing reply. It is suggested to the BSNL authorities should take steps to ensure that the bills are delivered in time. K. Santhanam, Kumbakonam. Encroachments on river banks Karur residents cannot forget the havoc caused by the recent floods. A ground bridge located in Pasupathipalayam over the Amaravathy River vanished due to flood. The river breached and water entered adjacent residential areas and a school was totally drowned. If the width of the river was sufficient to accommodate the flow of water, such untoward incidents could have been minimised. All these happened due to encroachments on the banks of this river. The authorities should take serious steps for removal of encroachments on the banks of rivers. S.P. Murugappan, Karur. Relay roads `All roads lead to Rome' is a famous proverb. `All roads lead to hell' is a practical proverb as far the condition of the roads in Lalgudi are concerned. I request the concerned authorities to take steps to relay all main roads in the area with immediate effect. E. Elamurugu, Tiruchi. Blinding headlights The blinding headlights of cars, two-wheelers and even buses and trucks using powerful halogen lamps and not dimming the same while on movement within the city, continue to create terrible inconvenience to pedestrians, especially while crossing from one side of the road to the other. The traffic police should see that each vehicle user pastes a dark patch on the headlights and periodically check up the same and impose a spot fine on negligent drivers. Will the new Police Commissioner look into the matter and do the needful S. Renganathan, Tiruchi.
