Ramanathapuram is a drought-prone district. This year due to good rainfall and flood in the Vaigai river water is flowing. But, the entire water in the Vaigai going waste in to the sea. Our rainfall statistics in the National Informatic Centre shows every decade an abnormal rainfall occurs (more than 1000 mm). It is painful to note that the shutters in the Parthibanur regulator is not functioning. Hence water could not be diverted into RMC and LMC to full the banks. I appeal to the authorities concerned to take necessary measures to store the water and prevent it from draining into the sea. V. Rajendran, Paramakudi. Bank interest rates Of late, all banks, public sector and private, have hiked the interest rates offered by them on NRE deposits. In this, they have taken a leaf out of the banks in the U.S., which have been periodically enhancing their rates of interest on the deposits made with them. But, sadly enough our banks continue to give only a step-motherly treatment to the resident depositors and refuse to be fair to them by simultaneously hiking the interest rates for them. Attraction for foreign money seems to be stronger than for local funds. "Be Indian" "Buy Indian" we are told. But, in practice, we desire to `Be foreign" Buy foreign". G.K.S. Kandasubramanian, Sivaganga. Ply more buses In Tuticorin district, Eral is an important town with many commercial establishments located in the area. But, bus facilities from this town to places like Tirunelveli and Tiruchendur leave a lot to be desired. It is high time the Tuticorin transport authorities do the needful to ply more buses from Eral to Tiruchendur and to Tirunelveli. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Tuticorin. Training in martial arts This has reference to the report "Up in arms to save indigenous martial arts from extinction" (The Hindu dated December 9). The schools rather prefer to teach karate and judo to their pupils than teach Silambam. No doubt indigenous marital arts such as `Silambam' and Kalavi' should be made popular among students. Every school has a Scout troupe. The students who have joined in Scout should be trained in these arts. They must be given chances to show their talent in marital arts (Silambam and Kalavi) in the school day function. G. Purushothaman, Tirunelveli.
