Title for Thavil maestro

CHENNAI:
The title "Sangeetha Kala Nipuna" was conferred on the Thavil maestro, Haridwaramangalam A.K. Palanivel, at a function here on Monday.
Instituted by the Mylapore Fine Arts Club, the title carried a medallion, a citation, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs. 5,000.
K. Viswanathan, managing director of RmKV Wedding Silks, presented the title. He said the maestro had been experimenting even while sticking to the tradition. Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, Mridangam exponent, said Mr. Palanivel worked hard and had unquenchable thirst to acquire knowledge in music.
Madurai G.S. Mani, veteran musician, said the Thavil exponent inherited a great legacy.
Mr Palanivel said the title would provide encouragement to the community of Thavil players.
K.J. Chandran, club president, spoke. Winners of the music competitions held earlier were given the prizes.
