Film stars, fans celebrate Rajni's birthday

Director K. Balachander launched the Rajni Express

CHENNAI: He cut the cake twice on Saturday, two days ahead of his birthday on December 12.

True to his practice, Superstar Rajnikant was away from Chennai on his birthday. So the fans in the city decided to celebrate the birthday on that day.

On Saturday morning, Vijay Television made elaborate arrangements for the birthday celebration.

It brought in Rajni Express, a 1000-metre white cloth on which VIPs signed their best wishes for the Superstar.

It travelled all over the city for the past week, meeting nearly 40,000 people at various places in the city like Satyam Theatre and Abirami Mega Mall.

Director K. Balachander launched the Rajni Express by writing on the banner, `Anbil Uyaram Nee, Endrum Sigaram Nee, Vazhga Nee Rajni'. Nearly 28 artists and technicians such as Vikram, Surya, Simbu (who not only wrote the wishes but also drew a figure like Rajnikant) Nayanthara, and Namitha wrote their thoughts and wished the actor on his birthday.

Kamal Haasan, in his message, said Rajni's age should be calculated based on the year he entered film field. "I wish Rajnikant all the best in his endeavours."

Rajni, who took a look at the banner, however said he did not wish to celebrate his birthday this year. "I did not want to celebrate my birthday mainly because of sufferings the people of Tamil Nadu due to the rain and floods. When so many people want to wish me I am happy. My birthday wish is that from next year the rain gods should not give us floods." He then went on to cut a 10 kg birthday cake specially made for the occasion, wishing him "Happy Birthday Super Star."

In the evening it was the cassette release function of Bhagyaraj's "Parijathjam" where he cut another cake. There he spoke about his association with Bhagyaraj.

Rajnikant was in Tirupathi on Sunday night from where he went straight to the Ramoji Rao Film City in Hyderabad, where he will begin shooting for the AVM venture `Sivaji' on December 14.

Director Shanker, who normally shoots a song on the first few days of his new film, is all set to do the same for AVM's "Sivaji". The film has Rajnikant and Shreya in the lead with K.V. Anand handling the camera and A.R.Rahman will score the music. S.P. Muthuraman has been made associate producer of the film.
