PATHANAMTHITTA: Abraham Mulamoottil, the brain behind the building of the Mar Athanaseus College for Advanced Studies, Thiruvalla, is celebrating silver jubilee of his priesthood. The college is considered the first successful self-financing private professional institution in the State.

Socio-political groups in central Travancore organised a meeting to felicitate Fr. Mulamoottil at St. John's Cathedral Hall in Thiruvalla on Sunday.

Inaugurating the meeting, the Mar Thoma Metropolitan, Philipose Mar Chrysostom, hailed the contributions of Fr. Mulamoottil in educational as well as socio-cultural spheres.

``Fr. Mulamoottil is a man of social commitment and his contributions to society have already become part of the modern socio-cultural history of central Travancore. What we need is more people and visionaries like Fr. Mulamoottil,'' the Rev. Mar Chrysostom said.

The cathedral, rebuilt recently at a cost of Rs. 4 crores, stood high as a testimony to the vision and will power of Fr. Mulamoottil. The idea of recreating the old Cathedral, popularly known as Koodarappalli, demolished three years ago as the structure became weak, was Fr. Mulamoottil's.

Addressing the meeting, Issac Mar Cleemis, Bishop of Thiruvalla diocese of the Malankara Catholic Church, said the cathedral, having an ancient temple-like exterior with conventional church interiors, had become a landmark of Thiruvalla.

The Rev. Mar Cleemis said the Malankara Catholic Church was proud to get the services of a visionary like Fr. Mulamoottil.

The senior Bishop Geevarghese Mar Themotheos delivered the benedictory speech.

Jacob M. Abraham, professor, recalled that it was Fr. Mulamoottil who had launched the groundwork for upgrading Pushpagiri Hospital into a medical college in 1999 in his capacity as hospital administrator. Bishop of the Believers Church in India K.P. Yohannan blessed the occasion.
