ALAPPUZHA: The Government will take stringent action to remove non-eligible persons from the list of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, Minister for Civil Supplies Adoor Prakash has said. Inaugurating a meeting of officials of the department in Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts at the Alappuzha Collectorate Conference hall on Monday, Mr. Prakash said it was an offence to get enlisted as BPL family hiding facts. The Minister said around 20 per cent of those in the present BPL list was non-eligible. Mr. Prakash said the Government would give time to all non-eligible persons to submit applications for getting their names removed from the list. At the same time, no eligible person would be removed from the BPL list, he said. Mr. Prakash said those who applied for a new ration card with complete records would be provided with it on the same day. The officials should not deny the demands of the public citing silly reasons, he said. Civil Supplies Director V.R. Padmanabhan said action would be taken against officials who failed to take action against ration shop owners indulging in malpractices. Those who took part in the meeting included Secretary of the Civil Supplies Department Sheela Thomas and Rationing Controller M.K. Balakrishnan.
