Rural school bags award for computer literacy

PERAMBALUR: The Government Higher Secondary School in Padalur in Perambalur district has bagged the `Computer Literacy Excellence Award for Schools for 2004,' a prize instituted by the Union Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

The award was given in recognition of its contribution to spread and promotion of computer literacy among students and public.

The President of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, gave away a trophy and a cash award of Rs.1.50 lakhs to the Headmistress of the school, D. M. Chellammal Thilagavathy, at a function held at New Delhi on Wednesday.

When the school introduced computer in its Plus-One curriculum during 2000-01, it did not have trained teachers. So, the authorities roped in the services of the Everonn Systems (India) Limited, Chennai, which deputed S. Shyamala and T. Tamizharasan to handle classes for the students.

From the next academic year, computer literacy session was thrown open to all students from standard VI to Plus-Two.

Periodical exhibitions

The schools' periodical conduct of exhibitions on computer literacy, creation of a web site for the school, handling computer classes for differently abled students, computer sessions for school teachers and for teachers of other schools under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan led to its selection for the award, according to the Headmistress.
