Students of high school and upper primary classes in Kozhikode are busy preparing answers for the P.T. Bhaskara Panikker Smaraka Bala Shastra examination conducted annually in memory of the renowned teacher and environmental activist P.T. Bhaskara Panikker. The examination - novel, informal in every way - was inaugurated in the district on December 11 at the P.P. Moideen Seva Mandir at Mukkom near Kozhikode. The question paper is the same for high school and upper primary sections, though there are different prizes. Students are provided with a 200-page answer book and answers can be written by consulting any source. The major criterion is to test the originality and ingenuity of the young. Students have one-and-a-half-month to return the answer book. Illustrations conceptualised by the student are part of the examination code and welcomed to gauge their talent. The test is conducted with the objective of instilling scientific temper, mathematical prowess, talent in rural technology besides participation in social activity. The first prize is a gold medal. The second prizewinner gets a silver medal.
