Coimbatore: Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly K. Kalimuthu on Tuesday launched a website on Bharathiar hosted by the Tamil Department of the Bharathiar University here. He also released a compact disc containing the life history of the poet and his works. Vice-Chancellor of the University S. Sivasubramanian received the first CD. The Speaker said that literatures of the Sangam age were easy to understand for a common man, but the writers in the subsequent periods made literatures a platform for displaying their knowledge. This slowly distanced common people from Tamil literature. The literary works of Bharathiar in simple style in the 20th century bridged the gap, the Speaker said. He was the one who brought Tamil literature from the courtrooms of kings to common man and made them more relevant to their life. Mr. Kalimuthu exhorted students to work towards creating a society sans caste and creed to fulfil the vision of Bharathiar. Head of the Department of Tamil R. Chandrasekharan said that taking a cue from a Tamil magazine, the Vice-Chancellor had asked the Tamil Department to create a website on Bharathiar. Professor V. Jaya introduced the website and detailed the contents of the CD.
