KANNUR : The hartal called by Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) to protest against the country's participation in the World Trade Organisation Ministerial Meeting in Hong Kong on Tuesday drew partial response here.

Though merchants' organisations announced that shops here would not be closed on the hartal day, most of the shopkeepers chose to keep their shops closed. Very few private buses operated normal services. The KSRTC operated its schedules from here.

Private taxis, autorikshaws and lorries also were mostly off the road.

Most of the schools conducting examinations had declared a holiday in view of the hartal.
