Salem aides remanded

Staff Reporter

MUMBAI: A special court on Tuesday remanded underworld don Abu Salem's aides, Naeem Abu Khan and Riaz Siddiqui, to police custody till January 3, 2006. They were arrested on Monday for their alleged involvement in the murder of builder Pradeep Jain.

The Anti-Terrorist Squad, which is investigating the case, arrested Naeem Khan at the international airport here after he landed from Dubai. Riaz Siddiqui, the other accused, was arrested after he was called for questioning on Monday.

Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told TADA judge P.V. Bavkar that both the accused were part of the conspiracy to murder Jain over a property dispute. He told the court that there was substantial evidence against them and the police required custody for further investigation. He said some more accused had to be traced and arrested.

After Jain's murder in 1995, Naeem left India and was staying in Dubai.

Abu Salem will be in the custody of the anti-terrorist squad till December 17 in the case.
