BANGALORE: Reiterating General Motors' (GM) long-term commitment to India, the Vice President of GM, Research and Development and Strategic Planning, Lawrence D. Burns, on Tuesday said the India Science Lab (ISL) in Bangalore would be key to GM's growth plans in India. The lab is complementary to the six labs in North America. Addressing a news conference, Mr. Burns said GM expected to achieve record sales outside of America, launch three new products and expand its capacities and helping all this happen would be technology advancement. "There has been a growth in our spend on advanced technology and we do not run the company on headcount." The company, he said, spent substantially on research and development and the ISL had an investment of $20 million in the first phase. Giving details about the Bangalore lab, Alan I. Taub, Executive Director, Research and Development at GM, said the lab had developed a proactive technology that could predict as to when a machine had to go for maintenance. This technology would be used across GM facilities. The company was looking at quality output from the Bangalore lab, which at present had a headcount of 75 researchers, many of them from the Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institutes of Technology.
