President to inaugurate hospital on January 22

ALMOST COMPLETE: Construction of the children's hospital at Shravanabelagola is fast progressing.

SHRAVANABELAGOLA: The construction of the children's hospital at Shravanabelagola is fast progressing and President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will inaugurate it on January 22, Sri Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji of Srikshetra Shravanabelagola has said.

Speaking to The Hindu , he said that the children's hospital is the contribution of Sri Digambara Jain Mutt Committee (SDJMC) on occasion of the Mahamastakabhisheka. The committee dedicated the Institute of Prakrit Studies during the previous Mahamastakabhisheka. The hospital is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.50 crores and will provide round-the-clock service to the people of the area. The construction of the staff quarters is also progressing, he said.

Sources in the State-level committee formed for conducting Mahamastakabhisheka said that the State Government has released Rs. 79.56 crores for the completion of development works taken up in and around Shravanabelagola and sent a proposal to the Finance Department to sanction another Rs. 35 crores. Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh has assured the committee of approving the proposal, they said.

The funds released to various government departments is as follows: National Highway Authority, Mangalore Division, Rs. 10 crores; Public Works Department (for creating road network) Rs. 9.5 crores; Superintending Engineer, PWD, (for the construction of scaffoldings to Bahubali statue) Rs. 8 crores; Superintending Engineer, PWD, Mandya Division, Rs. 2 crores; Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company (CHESCOM) Rs. 3 crores; SDJMC (for the construction of guest houses) Rs. 2.90 crores; Department of Information Rs. 1 crore; Hassan Police Department Rs. 1,61 crores; Executive Engineer, Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board Rs. 3 crores; and Health Department Rs. 1.50 crores.

The work on supplying water from the Hemavathi to Shravanabelagola and construction of the drainage system in the pilgrim town is nearing completion. The work on electrification of five satellite towns, taken up by CHESCOM, upgradation of primary health centre of Shravanabelagola, electrification and beautification of the town are also progressing.

In all probability, excepting the work on international standard, interpretation centre, all other development work will be completed by January 15, sources said.

Managing Director, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, Sreenivasa Murthy visited Shravanabelagola on Tuesday and discussed with senior officials the progress of work taken up to connect Shravanabelagola to the southern parts of the country. He, who is also the chairman of the committee formed to finalise the proposal on setting up of cable car to Vindyagiri, has reportedly informed the swamiji that the committee succeeded in clearing the apprehensions of the Archaeological Survey of India with regard to setting up of cable car to Doddabetta, to transport dignitaries, physically challenged and aged persons to the top of the hill. He hoped that the ASI clears the project at the earliest.
