NEW DELHI: Last year's Asian under-8 girls' champion K. Sai Nirupama has clearly moved to a higher level and she proved it in style by making sure of the under-10 gold with a round to spare in the Parvsnath Asian Youth chess championship at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here on Tuesday.

Nirupama defeated Mongolia's Bayarmaa Bayarjargal in 41 moves following an irregular opening and moved to 7.5 points from eight rounds.

With a 1.5-point lead over Mongolia's S. Tsogtsaihan and Vietnam's Do Hoang Minh Tho, she made sure of India's first gold irrespective of the result of her final round on Wednesday.

However, India's dreams of a possible golden sweep ended when Vietnam's Ton That Nhu Tung benefited from Parimarjan Negi's oversight to not only extricate himself from an inferior position and win but also move closer to the title in the open under-14 section.

Tung, with seven points, enjoys a one-point lead over the field and needs only a draw in the final round to take the gold.
