Chennai : N. Ramachandran, executive director, India Cements and president, Asian Squash Federation, was felicitated by the International Hockey Federation on Monday. Hailing Mr. Ramachandran's involvement in the charity tie in aid of the victims of the devastating earthquake that rocked both India and Pakistan, Els van Breda Vriessman, President, FIH, underscored the fact that the hockey community owed much to the sponsor, and his commitment to the cause of sports and social welfare.
For a noble cause
Ms. Els pointed out how the charity tie served as the means to bringing the Indian and Pakistani teams together to contribute to a noble cause. Ms. Els presented a silver plaque as a token of FIH's appreciation to the support that Mr. Ramachandran and India Cements Ltd. lent for the benefit match. In his welcome speech, Mr. Ramachandran outlined the tradition of hockey culture in the State, and how it is being fostered by agencies like IHF, Tamil Nadu HA, Tamil Nadu Olympic Association and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). The function was attended by the top brass of the FIH, which included Messrs Dennis Meridith and Matthew Slade, events and communications managers in the FIH, the umpires who are on duty here for the Champions Trophy, the tournament director, Ken Read, president of the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association, B. Sivanthi Adityan, the organising secretary, K. Jothikumaran, the managers Harmik Singh (India) and Saeed Khan (Pakistan), former Olympians and Muneer Sait, who organised the benefit tie as representative of the FIH.
