Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA: Shimoga District Central Cooperative Bank (SDCCB) president R.M. Manjunath Gowda said here on Tuesday that the Vikas Voluntary Vahini clubs, which were an effective link between the cooperative banks and customers, should grow on a wider scale. Mr. Gowda was inaugurating the agricultural development information camp organised for the volunteers of the self-help groups (SHGs) and Vikas Voluntary Vahini (VVV) clubs. He suggested that the like-minded organisations such as the Stree Shakthi groups should join hands with such attempts. He said the Vikas Voluntary Vahini clubs, which were launched by the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1982, have grown having taken their number to over 14,000 in the country, 2,100 in the State and 70 in the Shimoga district. He said that 50 of the clubs in the district were sponsored by the bank. He said the performance of these clubs in recent years has not been satisfactory and added that they could be put on the right path if the like-minded organisations extended their support to them. He said these clubs should be made aware of the need to take action for recovery of loans extended by them if they were to come out of the present position. Director of Instruction at the UAS College of Agriculture K. Kenchaiah presided over the function. H. Narayanaswamy, organiser of the camp, welcomed the gathering. Bank General Manager B.A. Mahadevappa, A.S. Vishwanathaiah, a progressive farmer; Assistant Director of Agriculture Narasimhamurthy, Associate Director of Research at the UAS Regional Research Station G.L. Vishweshwaragowda, Assistant General Manager of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Krishna and the District Lead Bank Manager M.S. Lalasangi were present. The training camp was organised jointly by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra and the bank.
