Partial response

to hartal

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The hartal called by the CPI(ML) on Tuesday demanding India's exit from the World Trade regime among other things was by and large peaceful in the State.

According to reports reaching here, the hartal call evoked some response only in Thrissur. While the response was partial in the other northern districts, the call went virtually unheeded in the southern districts.

In the northern districts, shops and commercial establishments remained closed at some places. There were fewer vehicles on the roads. Isolated incidents of stone throwing were reported from a number of places. — Staff Reporter

UDF to discuss

panel report

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The UDF will discuss the report of the sub-committee appointed by it to study the problems of the agricultural, fisheries and traditional industries sectors at its meeting to be held at the Kovalam Guest House on December 15.

UDF convener P.P. Thankachan said here on Tuesday that the meeting would also discuss the proposals to reduce electricity tariff and sanction educational institutions in the private sector. He asked the ministers and leaders to avoid other official engagements on the day as the meeting, which is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m., was likely to continue throughout the day. — Special Correspondent

Cruise vessel

arriving today

KOCHI: Cruise vessel Deutschland will call at the Kochi Port on Wednesday. The vessel, sailing from Mumbai, is expected to berth here by 8 a. m. with 459 passengers and 257 crew. The vessel will stay at Kochi for a day before it sails off at 6 a.m. on Thursday.

This is the fifth cruise vessel to call at Kochi during the current tourism season. — Staff Reporter

Pilgrim dies of

cardiac arrest

PATHANAMTHITTA: A 32-year-old pilgrim, identified as Thirumalai Swami, of Ayakkudi in Palani, Tamil Nadu, died of cardiac arrest while climbing the hills at Saramkuthi on Tuesday evening. According to the Travancore Devaswom Board Information Office at Sabarimala, the body was taken to Palani in an ambulance later. Thirumalai Swami is the 11th pilgrim to die of cardiac arrest at Sabarimala during the ongoing annual pilgrim season. — Staff Reporter
