Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Employees-Teacher Joint Council today threatened indefinite strike next month if the State Government failed to fulfil their demands, including 50 per cent merger of DA in the basic effective from April 2004. The Council, which represents over 1.5 million State Government employees and teachers, also gave 15 days' time to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to accept the demands otherwise the employees would be forced to go on strike. Council convenor V.P. Mishra told reporters that an agreement was signed with the Government on September 4 to sort out the issues within a month. "But even after three months, the U.P. Government is not taking any initiative to meet our demands." Mr Mishra also opposed the U.P. decision to shift the Labour Commissioner's office from Kanpur to Lucknow. "Employees will oppose the move as the State Government wants to sell the Government building at Kanpur which houses the labour commissioner's office.'' The State employees are agitating against the Government decision to enforce the implementation of 50 per cent DA merger with basic from April 2005, while the employees are demanding it from April 2004. -- UNI
