Court notice to Centre

NEW DELHI: The Delhi court has issued notice to the Centre and some tobacco companies on a PIL seeking a complete ban on manufacture, sale and consumption of cigarettes and other tobacco products in the country.

A Division Bench of Justices Vijender Jain and Rekha Sharma asked the Centre and the respondent tobacco companies to file their replies to the petition by February 14, 2006, the next date of hearing.

The PIL filed by Tobacco Control Foundation of India (TCFI) alleged that the Government has failed to take any concrete steps to check the consumption of tobacco despite being a signatory to WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in May 2003. The foundation has sought direction to ITC limited, Godfrey Philips India Ltd, Wazir Sultan Tobacco Company Ltd, Golden Tobacco Company Ltd to deposit Rs 1,800 crore to create a corpus fund to fight diseases caused by consumption of tobacco products. - PTI
