MYSORE: Students held a demonstration in the city on Tuesday in protest against the Centre's move to bring education under the purview of General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) during the World Trade Organisation (WTO) meet in Hong Kong. The protest organised by All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) in Mysore coincided with the starting of the WTO summit in Hong Kong on Tuesday. Students from various colleges gathered at K.R. Circle, holding placards and banners, under the aegis of AIDSO. Shouting slogans against the Centre's move, they marched towards the Deputy Commissioner's office along D.. Devaraj Urs Road. They submitted a memorandum addressed to the Union Government, opposing the inclusion of education in GATS and demanding withholding of legislation on admission and tuition fee structure in private professional colleges. In a press statement, AIDSO's Mysore District Committee President M. Umadevi condemned the move to bring education under WTO-GATS, which considers education as a "tradeable service". Globalisation has thrown millions of students out of the ambit of knowledge, she said.
