CHENNAI:
Anna Nagar police have arrested two brothers on charges of stealing jewellery from several retailers in the city. A special team from Anna Nagar made the arrest in Pondicherry on Monday.
A. Arun, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anna Nagar, detailing their modus operandi, said Shiva (24) and his brother, Rajendran (27) of Kodambakkam, visited jewellery shops under the pretext of buying ornaments. They would select very expensive jewellery and then convince the shop owners that the jewellery was meant for their aged mother. As she was not able to come to the shop, they would ask the shop owner to send someone with them to collect the cash.
Believing them, several shop owners had sent their employees with them. Mr. Arun said they would leave with the employee in a car, and subsequently beat up the employee and escape with the jewellery.
The two had stolen nearly 70 sovereigns from various shops in Tirumangalam, Sembium, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar in Chennai, he said.
The two, who have been charged with cheating and extortion, are in judicial custody, Mr. Arun added.
