Railway staff detected the abandoned box containing the explosives



DEADLY STUFF: The explosives that were found in a railway coach in Mangalore on Tuesday.

MANGALORE: An abandoned cardboard box in the S6 compartment of the Mangalore-Chennai Mail which arrived in Mangalore this afternoon, sent the railway staff and policemen in a tizzy.

The abandoned box was detected by Railway staff, who were carrying out routine inspection of the compartments. As the box looked suspicious, they informed the police control room. The Mangalore South (Pandeshwar) Police personnel and the district anti-sabotage team examined the contents of the box, which had 48 brown coloured materials, the size of cricket balls and two cylindrical items about 10 inches by six inches, a departmental press release here said.

There was also some black powder wrapped in a newspaper and some loose fuse wires.

The box along with its contents was shifted to the police parade ground in the DAR premises and local explosive experts were summoned to examine the contents.

The experts said the explosives were of a crude variety. the release added.

Mangalore Railway Police have registered a case in this regard and are investigating. The Forensic Science Laboratory has been requested to send a team for examination. The State Intelligence has been requested to send their Bomb Disposal Unit for assistance.

The Dakshina Kannada Police is assisting the Railway Police in the investigation.
