SAD REFLECTION: Overflowing sewerage on the main roads and vacant plots of SBH Colony near Trimulgherry. - Photo: D. Gopalakrishnan
HYDERABAD: When P. Vijaykumar built his house 15 years ago in an idyllic setting near Trimulgherry, all he wanted was some peace and quietude to last even as construction activity boomed all around. Little did he expect his house to be swamped with sewerage overflow raising stink and slush. The State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) Colony, with some 70 houses, is facing the brunt of more houses coming up in its neighbouring colony of Aruna Enclave on an upper incline with an inadequate septic tank. "For more than a year we have been suffering from the overflow of the tank. We have contacted the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) and also the neighbouring society, but no solution has been found. Even our groundwater is getting murky," bemoans Mr. Vijaykumar. What makes it worse for SBH Colony residents is that its children's park has been partly inundated and rendered useless because of the sewer water. Similar is the case of empty plots nearby. "My friend wants to start construction of his house but till the seepage is stopped he cannot," points out the bank employee.
SCB blamed
The colony, like any other under SCB, has no proper underground sewerage system. Most colonies have only underground sewer pipes to drain into a collection pit. However, ever since the colony residents allowed its neighbour to connect their drain to its own line, they are regretting the same. SCB sanitation staff did attend to the problem but it only provided temporary relief. "Everyone knows the solution is to lay a bigger pipeline and take the sewer link farther away. But both the SCB and the Aruna Enclave Association are delaying it," charges Mr. Vijaykumar. Residents' patience is running thin and neighbours are warned that their pipeline may be blocked if no action is forthcoming. Also, garbage clearance and sanitation by SCB leaves much to be desired. While the colony has made its own arrangement for picking up household garbage, it waits for its streets to be swept once in a blue moon.
