KSSIA opposes seizure operations

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: More than six months after a high-level task force on small industries decided to solve the problems hampering the growth of small industrial units in the State, the Kerala State Small Industries Association (KSSIA) is seeking the Chief Minister's intervention to get those decisions implemented.

President of the association Xavier Thomas Kondody said recently that small industries were still straddled with problems hampering their working, which, sometimes, threatened their survival despite promises made by the Government.

The most recent of the troubles had emerged from implementation of the Value-added Tax (VAT) regime, under which products from small units headed for clients without presumptive or tax index numbers were being seized by sales tax officials.

Mr. Kondody alleged that seizure of vehicles and goods had been on for about a week, disrupting industrial activities of the small units.

He said small units were now unable to take part in bids.
