Starry nights are here again

Christmas stars this season around sport names of popular Malayalam movies. And Christmas decorations from China are the favourite items used to decorate the Christmas tree.

Pointing to a sachet of golden decorative items, U. Abdurehman, a shopkeeper in Nadakkave here, says items from Kochi and Mumbai would soon be overtaken by those made in China -- for the finish and moderate price. Even Santa Claus masks from China have flooded the market. It would not be surprising if the stars made in China too arrive here next Christmas.

Now the paper Christmas stars available in Kozhikode during the season are made in Kochi, Kunnamkulam, Kollam and Sivakasi while the decorative items come from Kochi and Mumbai.

`Anyan', `Rajamanikyam', `Naran' are some of the names by which Christmas stars are known this year. `Anyan' is a seven-spiked star that comes in all colours. The sale of stars has increased considerably since the last couple of years, says Jijitlal, another shopkeeper.

However, despite the newer and more ornate models arriving, the traditional Star of Bethlehem is still the choice of the majority of customers, shop owners point out.
