Sore throat lets down Shivraj Patil

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : All business relating to the Home Ministry was postponed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday as the Union Home Minister had virtually lost his voice due to a sore throat.

It happened during the question hour when Mr. Patil attempted to reply a question raised by BJP member Sushma Swaraj on whether the government proposed to formulate any joint policy with Nepal to combat Maoists after the Jehanabad jail attack.

"I sympathise with the Home Minister for his bad throat. If he wants the question can be postponed to next Wednesday," Ms. Swaraj said. "No point sympathising. You must show sympathy," Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat said amidst laughter.

After Mr. Patil agreed, it was then decided to postpone all business relating to the Home Ministry. This included a question on rape of minor girls and a Calling Attention discussion to matter of public importance regarding the "grave situation arising out of the prolonged violence prevailing in tribal dominated areas in Assam resulting in loss of human life and properties."
