Kozhikode: Three workers of the Kerala Students Union (Indira) were injured in a clash with the police after an agitation of the students against the move to shift the Calicut University sub-centres at Vadakara in Kozhikode district on Wednesday turned violent. KSU (Indira) Kozhikode district vice-president R. Joshibal, secretary V.P. Nishad and Vadakara block president K. Bavit were admitted to the Vadakara Government Hospital, the police said. The trouble started in the morning when the students numbering 70, including five girls, took out a march to the B.Ed. Centre at around 11 a.m. After the march, a few students tried to break the police cordon resulting in clashes between the students and the police. A case was registered against nine students in connection with the incident. None of them were arrested. The accused were charged with Section 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 148 (armed with deadly weapons), 149 (common purpose for rioting) and 332 (causing hurt to deter public servant from discharging duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the police said. However, a march taken out by the Students Federation of India (SFI) activists soon after the incident to the Calicut Information Centre on the same issue was peaceful. They also staged a sit-in in front of the centre.
