Tirunelveli
Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI: In a bid to improve the quality of services being rendered to the public, the Tirunelveli Corporation has developed a strategy of involving more number of residents' welfare associations in all sorts of services of the civic body. Though the population under the jurisdiction of this civic body is gradually swelling, the corporation cannot augment its workforce, thanks to the blanket ban on recruitments, imposed by the State Government. This bar has serious impact on conservancy works and stagnation of garbage in many points. Following this, the Corporation in association with various residents' welfare associations here decided to utilise the services of the self-help groups in clearing the garbage. As the functioning of these SHG members was satisfactory, their tenure has been extended by another three months from December. Buoyed by these results, the Mayor, A. Jayarani, and the Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, have planned to involve more number of residential associations in fine-tuning the functioning of the Corporation. When they conducted a meeting at Thatchanallur recently, the participants from the residential associations expressed their willingness to cooperate with the civic body. As per this plan, the associations would collect petitions from their residents and hand them over to the officials concerned on behalf of them. "It is not possible for them to come to the Corporation to air their grievances and get them rectified. If they can assign this work to their representatives, they will take up the matter with the right official to get things done," said Mr. Chandrasekaran. As per this plan, the telephone and mobile phone numbers of the Corporation would be publicised shortly to enable the public to contact the right official for their grievances or civic problems. "We invite suggestions from all quarters to perfect our services further and welcome the residents' welfare associations to join hands with the Corporation to ensure proper roads, adequate supply of drinking water, streetlights, sewage channels etc.," Ms. Jayarani said.
