Declare Tamil Nadu calamity hit, says DPI

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Dalit Panthers of India has urged the Centre to declare Tamil Nadu as affected by natural calamity considering the intensity of the situation where 22 out of 30 districts have been hit due to floods.

Though the loss of human lives had been minimal, the extent of damage to property was extensive as flood destroyed hundreds of villages and breached roads in several areas, DPI general secretary Thol. Tirumavalavan, said.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, he appealed to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to convene an all-party meeting to demand an enhanced flood relief of at least Rs.25,000 crore. This apart, steps should be initiated to take up rehabilitation and renovation to help people restart their lives.

Mere grant of Rs.2,000 or Rs.1,000 as relief would not serve the purpose because this could not compensate the degree of damage. Hence, the Government should provide Rs.10,000 to those whose houses were completely destroyed and Rs.15,000 an acre for crop damage.

Moreover, as the devastation had been similar to the havoc caused by tsunami, efforts should be made to involve non-governmental organisations in rehabilitation and restoration.

He said the DPI would stage demonstrations in front of Collectorates to call for the declaration of Tamil Nadu as affected by natural calamity and urging the State Government to convene an all-party meeting.
