Memorable day for Varun Gopal

Mysore: It was a memorable day for Varun Gopal. The ninth standard student of the Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Mysore, defeated two highly-ranked players on his way to the under-14 boys' final of the AITA junior talent series tournament at GTC and MTC courts on Wednesday.

Varun upset third-seeded State-mate C.M. Kiran 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. In the quarterfinals he had shocked top-seed Deepak Swaminathan (TN) 2-6, 7-6(6), 6-3.

Varun will meet wild-card entrant Indika Wettasinghe (Sri Lanka), who shocked second-seeded Vinod Gowda (Kar) 6-4, 6-4, in the final.

Kiran (Kar) bt Rohan Goankar (Kar) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2; Indika Wettasinghe (Sri Lanka) bt Senthil Kumar (TN) 6-1, 6-3; Vinod Gowda (Kar) bt Chirag S Igoor (Kar) 7-5, 6-4.

Under-16: Semifinals: Preetham Roy Mores (Kar) bt Vikas Hansoge (Kar) 6-0, 6-0. Quarterfinals: Preetham Roy Mores (Kar) bt H.J.
