HYDERABAD: Minister for Information and Energy Mohd. Ali Shabbir received a strong reply for certain comments he made on energy conservation from an unexpected quarter on Wednesday. Minister who was the guest of honour at the inauguration of the Energy Conservation Week narrated an incident when the former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, went back more than three kilometres to verify whether she had switched off the lights and fans in her office. When his turn came to speak, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy who launched the energy conservation week celebrations, said "what Mr. Shabbir wanted to say is correct as far as the conservation of electricity is concerned. But, what about the fuel that was used for the journey?" he asked amidst loud applause from the audience. The absence of mobile phones might have been one reason for the then Prime Minister to go back to her office.
Efficient utilisation
Dr. Reddy underscored the need for effective and efficient utilisation of the non-renewable energy as a "drop saved is a drop produced." He said the use of efficient motors, standard piping and certified capacitors and foot valves in the agriculture pump sets for instance would ensure 50 to 60 per cent saving in energy. He disclosed that the water used for gardening in his camp office-cum-residence residence was being recycled from sewerage. The Chief Minister wanted the NEDCAP to create awareness among all sections of society about the need for energy and water conservation.
