TO SPORT A NEW LOOK: An artist's impression of the Brahma Baidarkala Garody at Kankanady in Mangalore with presiding deities Koti-Chenaiah.
MANGALORE: Garody's are shrines where people of all faiths worship the spirits of the folk heroes of Dakshina Kannada, such as the Koti-Chenaiah twins who lived during the 17th Century and became legends owing to their fight against oppression. There are 230 garody's in Kasaragod, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of which the "Kankanady Brahma Baidarkala Garody," which is believed to have been built 133 years ago, is known as one of the "Shraddha Kendras" of the Billava community (Koti-Chenaiah belonged to the Billava community). This renovated garody, built completely out of granite, will be opened soon. The renovation was carried out in one year and at a cost of Rs. 70 lakhs. The Kankanady Garody is known for its "Nyana Dana" (dispensation of justice), which is also the main event at Dharmasthala. Legend says that these two places of worship are the last resort for those seeking justice. The Kankanady Garody has been completely renovated and the "Brahmakalashotsava" will be held during the annual jatra of the shrine on Sunday. The committee of the shrine directed by K. Chittaranjan as president said the shrine had been built in wood.
