Manmohan for release of Suu Kyi

Diplomatic Correspondent

"It is for them to solve their problems"

We favoured national reconciliation Myanmar leader appreciative of suggestion

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday called for release of Myanmar's leading political dissident Aung San Suu Kyi but said it was not his "purpose" to advice the military junta what it should do.

The Prime Minister made the point after meeting his Myanmar counterpart Soe Win in Kuala Lumpur. "We favoured national reconciliation and also the movement towards democracy, respect for fundamental human rights and allowing political activities to flourish," he said.

Dr. Singh, however, asserted on board his special aircraft that it was up to the Myanmar people to solve their problems.

(A source in the Prime Minister's delegation told this correspondent that Dr. Singh suggested to Mr. Soe Win that Myanmar should take steps towards democracy in its own interest. The Myanmar leader was appreciative of the suggestion.)

Dr. Singh said he reviewed the relations between the two countries with Mr. Soe Win. "We agreed that our two countries could do a great deal more in developing the transportation and hydrocarbon sectors."

Insurgency

Dr. Singh said he also discussed the issue of Myanmar territory being used by Indian insurgent groups. "I was assured that the Myanmar Government would fully cooperate and not allow its territory to be used against India."

Mr. Soe Win referred to the problems faced by Myanmar society. The country had "many tribes" and faced several insurgencies, he pointed out. He felt that some "outside powers" were supporting the insurgent groups in his country. He also told Dr. Singh that his nation was committed to "democracy" through the vehicle of the national convention.
