Award presented to vocalist Vedavalli

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Sangeetha Kala Aacharya Kallidaikurichi H. Mahadeva Bhagavathar Endowment Award 2005 was presented to vocalist R.Vedavalli by the K.R. Sundaram Iyer Music Trust here on Wednesday.

The citation said the award was "in recognition and appreciation of the Vidhushi's scholarly knowledge in Dikshithar's works and for her singular commitment and excellence in imparting this precious knowledge to students and rasikas of Carnatic music."

Receiving the award from violin exponent T.N. Krishnan, Ms. Vedavalli said it was a big honour. She considered it a direct blessing of her guru Mahadeva Bhagavathar in whose name it had been instituted.

Offering felicitations on behalf of Music Academy, V.V. Srivatsa said the Bhagavathar was a maha guru who focussed only on music. Speakers described K.R. Sundaram Iyer, in whose memory the trust was created, as "the man who brought motorcycles to India." He had devoted a vast portion of his "wholesome life" to things ranging from Carnatic music to a game of contract bridge.
