ON PUBLIC DEMAND: TTD Special Officer A.V. Dharma Reddy serving `chakkera pongali' to devotees at Tirumala on Thursday.

TIRUMALA: It's sweet news for pilgrims visiting Tirumala. The TTD management has decided to serve the most sought-after `prasadam' - chakkera pongali (sweet pongal) - to devotees under its Nitya Annadanam (free meal) Scheme every day.

According to statistics, some 15,000 pilgrims are provided meal free of cost daily under the scheme. The typical south Indian meals that is served daily will henceforth have sweet pongal as part of the new menu.

TTD Special Officer A.V. Dharma Reddy, who introduced the delicious dish on the menu on Thursday, said that the prasadam was being included at the request of pilgrims. He said that thousands of pilgrims represented the management to provide the `anna prasadam' of the Lord. Heeding to the request, the management decided to provide it in the free meals. Earlier, a small laddu or boondi used to be served to the pilgrims in the free meal.
