Unfair to Ganguly

It is unfortunate that the national selectors have thought it fit to sack the former captain, Sourav Ganguly, from the Test team despite his wonderful record. Only Indian cricket stands to lose because of this decision.

Harikumar S.,
Kollam, Kerala

On fails to understand the logic of our selectors. First, a man whose accomplishments in one-day internationals are next only to those of Sachin Tendulkar was dropped from the one-day squad. Then, after an unwanted controversy, he returned to the Test team. Now, he has been axed from the Test team too. It is clear that the latest decision is not based on performances.

M.D. Sridharan,
Chennai

Is this what awaits a player of Ganguly's stature? The Indian team is what it is today because of him. Most of the current team have had a taste of (successful) international cricket, again, only because of him.

I am no cricket lover but I still feel strongly against the shabby treatment meted out to Ganguly. He deserves a graceful farewell. How can we expect our youngsters to pursue sport as a career if outstanding performers are treated in this manner?

Rameeza A. Rasheed,
Chennai

An unceremonious axing. Under Ganguly, Team India achieved many laurels — winning the ICC champions trophy along with Sri Lanka, making it to the finals of the 2003 World Cup, winning the Natwest finals, humbling the all-conquering Australians in India, a historic series win in Pakistan, and so on.

For every star there comes a time when it is right to quit with the praise of contemporaries ringing in the ears. It is sad to see that Ganguly has failed to realise this. It was painful to watch him trying to play like the Sourav of old.

B. Rathnakar Rai,
Bangalore

Following Ganguly's ouster, it is time for wholesale change. Old blood should be replaced with young blood for the healthiness of Team India. The ultimate aim should be to win the World Cup in 2007.
