To recreate and link the thread that binds the shared heritage of Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa and India, Dastkari Haat Samiti and Durban-based Ukusa Designs will jointly conduct a crafts design workshop, "Afrikhadi", at Dilli Haat in the Capital from this Friday. The two-week workshop will be held during the annual "Crafts of India" bazaar. Working together since 2003 with support from the two governments, Dastkari Haat Samiti and Ukusa Designs have been encouraging participation of craftspeople from both countries through the Afrikhadi project. The project was founded on the need to enhance employment and earnings in traditional crafts skills through technical and design exchanges. Having brought together Indian and Pakistani artisans through the "Dostkari" project in March 2004 and Indian and Vietnamese artisans through the "Lotus Links" project in December 2004, Dastkari Haat Samiti has considerable experience in conducting international crafts design workshops. Ukusa Designs -- headed by Nadia Meer, niece of Fatima Meer, well-known freedom fighter against Apartheid -- has been working tirelessly to maximise job creation in South Africa by using existing talents and resources in the crafts sector. Artisans from both the countries practicing woodwork, basketry, wire work, embroidery, zari work, handblock printing and tribal painting will combine their skills during the workshop under the guidance of Nadia Meer and Aditi Prakash of Dastakari Haat Samiti.
