Pondicherry: Tanks (theerthakulams) are the latest attraction at the temples here. Thanks to the heavy rain Pondicherry received over a few days most tanks are brimming over and people are making a beeline for them to take in the unusual scene.

Temple tanks are the traditional catchment areas and the annual theppal utsavams are held here.

At the Sri Vedapureeswarar temple, the thirty-five steps to the bed of the tank that are normally visible are submerged. The tank is filled to capacity now to the delight of devotees.

At another temple, ducks could be seen swimming merrily across the water.

Residents in the areas near the temples said the water levels in their wells had risen because the tanks were full to capacity.

The ancient temple tanks are a reminder of the traditional Indian rainwater harvesting techniques.
