17 public holidays in Tamil Nadu next year

CHENNAI: The State Government has notified 17 days, including Independence Day, Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanthi, as Public Holidays in 2006.

A Government Order dated December 12 said the following days would be observed as Public Holidays: Bakrid (January 11), Pongal (January 14), Republic Day (January 26), annual closing of accounts for commercial banks and cooperative banks (April 1), Good Friday and Tamil New Year Day (April 14), May Day (May 1), Independence Day (August 15), Sri Krishna Jayanthi (August 16), Vinayaka Chathurthi (August 27), half yearly closing of accounts for commercial banks and cooperative banks (September 30), Ayudha Pooja (October 1), Gandhi Jayanthi and Vijaya Dasami (October 2), Deepavali (October 21), Ramzan (October 24) and Christmas (December 25).

According to the G.O., the Public Holidays have been declared under the explanation to Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, read with the Union Home Ministry's notification dated June 8, 1957.

General holidays

Through another G.O., the following days have been notified as General Holidays for 2006 : Bakrid (January 11), Pongal (January 14), Thiruvalluvar Day (January 15), Republic Day (January 26), Moharram (February 10), Good Friday and Tamil New Year's Day (April 14), May Day (May 1), Independence Day (August 15), Sri Krishna Jayanthi (August 16), Vinayaka Chathurthi (August 27), Ayudha Pooja (October 1), Gandhi Jayanthi and Vijaya Dasami (October 2), Deepavali (October 21), Ramzan (October 24) and Christmas (December 25).

In addition to Saturdays and Sundays, these General Holidays "shall also apply to all State Government Undertakings, Corporations, Boards etc," the G.O. said.
