CHANDIGARH: Severe cold wave sweeping across the northern States of the country claimed two lives, with the minimum temperature in most parts of the region plummeting between one to six degrees below normal. One person died of cold in Pathankot town of Punjab, police sources said here. The cold weather also claimed the life of a 35-year old man in Kanpur, where the mercury dipped to 4.6 degree Celsius. The mercury hovered between one to six degrees below normal in most parts of Punjab and Haryana with the Met office predicting no respite from the chilly conditions during the next day. The minimum temperature dipped by around two to three degrees in many places. In plains of Punjab and Haryana, Amritsar recorded a lowest of 0.4 degree Celsius, five degrees below normal. Chandigarh reeled under a minimum of 2.6 degree Celsius, five degrees below normal. Delhi recorded a low of 3.6 degree Celsius, four degrees below normal. The mercury touched six degrees below normal in Karnal which settled at a low of 2.5 degree Celsius. Ludhiana reeled under a low of 1.5 degree Celsius, five degrees below normal and Patiala recorded a minimum of 2 degree Celsius. In the hills, Bhuntar in Himachal Pradesh settled at minus 1.6 degree Celsius, four degrees below normal and Sunder Nagar touched a minimum of minus 0.9 degree Celsius. However, Shimla settled at a low of 7.3 degree Celsius. Normal life in Rajasthan's Pilani and Churu was severely affected due to icy winds where mercury plummeted to sub-zero level last night, a Met official said in Jaipur. PTI
