Thiruvananthapuram: M.G.A. Raman, Director General of Police (DGP), Prisons, has ordered the welfare officer of the Central Prison here to give a detailed report on the alleged assault on a convict inside the jail by a fellow prisoner on Wednesday. Trevor, who was recently convicted for murder, was allegedly beaten up by Mancheri Gireeshan, who is serving a life sentence for murder. The alleged assault had reportedly occurred in front of five prison warders. The DGP, who questioned Trevor at the prison on Wednesday, ordered that Gireeshan be confined separately from other prisoners. Mr. Raman instructed that prisoners who terrorised fellow inmates should not be allowed to roam free on the jail premises. Mr. Raman had issued an instruction sometime ago to keep a close watch on Gireeshan after he received some anonymous petitions accusing jail warders of using the convict to terrorise other prisoners. A prison official said that five warders, including two head warders, were being investigated in connection with the assault on Trevor. It was also being probed why Gireeshan was allowed free access to all areas in the prison despite the DGPs standing orders. Gireeshan had become accused in a second murder case in Kazhakuttom police station limits when he was on parole last year. The Poojappura police have recorded Trevor's complaint forwarded by the jail authorities. The complaint has been forwarded to the First Class Judicial Magistrate.
