Boyi Bheemanna passes away

HYDERABAD: Governor Sushilkumar Shinde condoled the demise of noted Telugu scholar Boyi Bheemanna here on Friday.

Mahakavi Boyi Bheemanna (94), who strove for the promotion of Telugu language, literature and culture for nearly seven decades, died at NIMS here on Friday following a brief illness. He is survived by wife, two sons and four daughters.

Born in Mamidikuduru in East Godavari district, he was a former Member of the Legislative Council from 1978 to 1984, journalist and teacher before embarking on his literary feats. He was awarded Padma Bhushan. His work `Gudiselu Kalipothunnayi' bagged the Sahitya Akademi award in 1975. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over his death. Andhra Saraswatha Parishat president C.Narayana Reddy and Telugu University V-C A. Manjulata mourned the poet.

Patriot dead

Musunuru Basava Rajyalakshmi (85) who along with her late husband Balakrishna Rao took up several agitations against the British died in Guntur on December 14.
